I would prefer to just always show them, unless there is a specific case we're solving for in hiding them, that I'm either not aware of or can't remember now.

Agree.

FWIW, Chinese Fennec has a global toggle to disable image loading in the browser. I guess some people use this kind of option to save broadband data. It would probably make more sense to have a global option instead of a reader-specific one.
