I find that the toast alerts are not very noticeable on larget tablet screens. e.g. I was holding the Galaxy Tab in portrait mode, and went to AMO to install adblock plus. I clicked on the "Add to firefox" link (which is near the top of the screen in the default viewport) and the "Downloading add-on" toast alert appeared. However, the toast appears near the bottom of the screen, pretty far away from where I was focusing my attention. I only caught a glimpse of it fading away out of the corner of my eye, but it would have been very easy to miss it completely. For devices with large physical screens like the Galaxy Tab 10.1, it would be good to bump up the size of the toast so that it is more noticeable and eye-grabbing.
Aren't we using the standard behavior for the toasts? So the suggestion is to use non-standard style and behavior? Of course, I worry about this back-firing on us.

Yes and yes. I also share the concern about it back-firing. But perhaps instead of replacing the view completely, we could use http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/Toast.html#getView%28%29 to get a handle to the view and twiddle some parameters on it to make it more noticeable? That should reduce the risk of such a change.
