spawned from bug 781504 interdiff doesn't work a lot of the time. it looks like the arecibo error handler is to blame here.
this fixes the problem on the 4.2 staging environment. i suspect there was a subtle timing issue which was hiding the problem before recent changes to our patchreader integration.
