Steps to reproduce:

Have numerous filters in Inbox directing to different folders.
Sometimes the msgFilterRules.dat file will go bad on opening TB and other times it will go bad when a new message comes in.
Tried reinstalling TB, both 15 & 16. It just took 16 a bit longer for the file to corrupt.

Actual results:

Thunderbird 14 filters keep working.

TB 15 and 16 the msgFilterRules.dat file keeps going bad and getting saved as rules backup.dat with an empty msgFilterRules.dat file getting created.

Tried reinstalling both 15 & l6 and same thing keeps happening.
Am going back to TB 14 again.

Expected results:

Filters should keep working when the file is not corrupted.
Is there any error in tools->error console after the file is replaced?

After I restore the email resotore made with TB 16, TB 14 also crashed the filters file.

I restored an earlier TB 14 restore I had saved and those filters continue to work.

I cannot give you the info you are asking for as far as I know since all TB settings in Users were deleted when I did the restore of the TB 14 file.

Where would I look to be sure it is gone for good?

(Q1)
What is actual file name? "rulesbackup.dat"? (no space)
What is timestamp(creation/update/read) and content of the file?
Valid and latest version of message filter rules? Or corruption is seen?
What did occur around the last update/read time?

> with an empty msgFilterRules.dat file getting created.

(Q2)
What does "empty" mean? Null file(file size=0)?
Or heading lines only with no rules definition?
What is timestamp(creation/modify/read) of the file?
What did occur around the last update/read time?

Assuming "rulesbackup.dat".
rulesbackup.dat seems used upon msgFilterRules.dat update or filter execution.

(Q3)
By Whom/When was msgFilterRules.dat and rulesbackup.dat accessed when problem happened?
Can you get and check Process Monitor log for file access?
Filter: If Path contains "rules"(no quotes), Include
If Path doesn't contain "XXXX"(no quotes), Exclude
(XXXX = a part of path name of mail directory for the account.)
( See Local Directory: of Server Settings of the accont.)
(This is needed to excluded irrelevant account's file access. )
  Process Monitor : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645
When problem happened, what activity was Tb doing?

(Q4)
Can yo see your problem with same mode of Tb?
("...\thunderbird.exe" -safe-mode)

(Q5)
What actions do you call by "restore the email restore made with TB 16"?
(Q6)
What kind of phenomenon do you call by "crashed the filters file"?
