Details

Currently in the unbranded version instances of "Firefox OS" have been replace with "B2G" based on this use case, replace “Firefox OS” with “this phone” or
with “this smartphone OS, based on Mozilla technology,”

The main offender is First Run Experience, but there could be other components like settings that exhibit this problem. Vivien who made the change will likely know what exactly has been changed.

This is so not a basecamp-blocker :)

We should not hold the release for this. Ever!

The only Gaia instance of "B2G" is in /shared/locales/branding/official/branding.en-US.properties, so this would be an easy patch to write. However, it would be kind of awkward to replace "B2G" with "this phone" because the places that use it assume it's a proper noun, so it's used at the beginning and in the middle of sentences (and in titles) without regard for capitalization. You can see this by searching for uses of {{brandShortName}}.

Is there some proper noun we could use?

(Also, there are a few strings created on the gecko side, such as browser error pages, and those still use "Firefox", but that's also true for desktop and Android, so I don't know if there's any simple way to fix that.)

My understanding of the branding guidelines (and I'm the brand guy here at mozilla) is that the unlicensed / white label / non-Firefox OS branded offering of our smartphone OS should not use either the terms B2G or Firefox in any way.

Regarding the proper noun substitution, I can only offer that the change be made to "This phone ..." or "this phone." If you need assistance with the actual writing I can help or get someone on my team to help.

Regarding substituting a term for "Firefox" when referring to the browser, I would suggest replacing with "your browser" since my understanding is that we will not be shipping a Firefox browser on the unlicensed version of the Smartphone OS.

Again, please let me know if you need writing assistance.

Thanks
Pete
