Topic: Postgres and Backups
Presenter: Selena Deckelmann
Date: 2013-02-06
Time: 12:00 UTC-8
Duration: 1 Hour
Privacy: The Public
Large Screen Location: MTV,
Description:
A wise DBA once said: you don't have working backups, only working restores.

This brownbag will demystify the two types of backup and restore for PostgreSQL (Postgres) and help you understand how to recover from a database failure.

Postgres is a powerful, open source SQL database used by Socorro (http://crash-stats.mozilla.com), and one of many database systems used by Mozilla. This talk will provide an overview of Postgres architecture, the core replication system that enables binary backups, and explain the reasons why you never need to take a Postgres database offline for backups. We'll also cover strategies for managing high-write load systems and high availability.

Special Requirements:
I'll have slides to present from a laptop and would like to broadcast on #airmozilla.
