What problems would this solve?

Notifying readers that comments on older posts are no longer available, so they don't have to look for a comment field - especially when they see previous comments.

Everyone, on old posts.

A text explaining that comments are closed for the current post.

What would users do? What would happen as a result?

They would read the text and understand that they can't comment.
