User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:20.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/20.0 Build ID: 20130409194949 Steps to reproduce: I was reading text in an HTML textarea. In that textarea there was a URL which I was trying to access using menu "Open link in New Tab". Actual results: When selecting the URL, I could not find the menu item "Open link in New Tab". Expected results: "Open link in New Tab" should be available to access URL's everywhere in the HTML page, including textarea, form inputs, etc'.
This Firefox limitation is very annoying and cases me to waste a lot of time in copying URL'S to the navigation toolbar.

AFAIK, normal text areas don't have URLs linkified. Is it a non-linkified URL, or is it a custom text editor?
(In reply to Aleksej [:Aleksej] from comment #2) > AFAIK, normal text areas don't have URLs linkified. Is it a non-linkified > URL, or is it a custom text editor? non-linkified URL

Component: Untriaged → Layout: Form Controls
Product: Firefox → Core
The code for this stuff lives in the Firefox UI (though it really shouldn't). I'm also not sure we should linkify URLs in text inputs.

In the w3c spec http://www.w3.org/TR/html5/forms.html#the-textarea-element seems that only plaintext content is accepted in textarea element

As dbaron said, this is a pure frontend thing.

It currently works for selection in ordinary non-editable text: bug 907733 comment 2.

(In reply to [:Aleksej] from comment #7) > It currently works for selection in ordinary non-editable text: bug 907733 > comment 2. Yes, hence the complaint. Also, the similar 'Search $engine for "$selection"' menu item works fine in textual form fields; I would have expected them to work under the same conditions (except for "Open link in New Tab" only working on URLs or links, obviously). As such, I think this is actually a defect report (the behaviour is inconsistent).
