What problems would this solve? =============================== This would let us note why a user has been banned or deactivated, or why they have special privileges, etc. Who would use this? =================== Admins. What would users see? ===================== Nothing. What would users do? What would happen as a result? =================================================== Admins would just have an extra field in the admin panel to take notes in about a user. Is there anything else we should know? ====================================== Nope.

I agree that we need this feature
Component: General → User management
Priority: -- → P2

Note that you can add comments on a user ban (but not the banned user). I've started using this to link to the revision or diff that is evidence of why I created the ban.

As noted, we have a field for storing a brief note when banning a user. So we have a record of why someone was banned. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what "special privileges" mean, but I'm not sure it'd be good to be giving such privileges to someone if we need bookkeeping to remember why we did so.

This is easy. Representative Koval of the Klingon localization community comes to Jean-Yves and volunteers to maintain that localization. They prove themselves over the next few months, so Jean-Yves grants them page move permissions. I've never heard of Koval, having never dealt with him, and one day I see that he's moving pages around. He's not doing anything wrong, but I suddenly freak out because some guy has advanced privileges, so I go trying to find out what's up. Having the note in the user record saves a lot of panicky looking for the person that knows why the privilege was granted.
