Details

In testing out bug 911604 I noticed that when I set a 3rd party default engine as a default and then head to the AwesomeScreen to conduct my initial search, I was not prompted to enabled Google Search suggestions. It seems like this action is dependant on Google being the default search provider. I'm not sure how we'll opt-in when we start to provide more than one search suggestion from more than one provider, but in this case I would have expected to see the same suggestion opt-in regardless of my default provider.

Steps:

i) New profile → http://duckduckgo.com
ii) Long-tap add as a search engine
iii) Settings → Set DuckDuckGo as default
iv) Tap the AwesomeScreen and begin to type

Expected: Initial Google Search suggestion opt-in
Actual: No initial search suggestion opt-in

Do we show search suggestions if you set DDG as your default engine?

No - Duck Duck Go is not capable of providing search suggestions, and it was decided in another bug that it would be confusing to show suggestions from Google (Currently the only bundled engine capable of providing suggestions) when another search engine was set as the default.
As such, at the moment, the only way you can ever get suggestions is to set Google as your default (Or add some other engine I've not heard of that does suggestions, and set that as your default)
So not showing the Opt-in when DDG is default seems like the right call. WONTFIX ?

Unless there's been a change of plan, aye. It is potentially confusing that we have a settings option for "Show search suggestions" that still can be toggled even if you choose an engine that can't do suggestions, with no real explantion.
