Google Docs offers an (almost) full-screen editing experience. Writing in Google Docs feels like writing in a word processor. We have tried offering a similar experience to users in the past, but our implementation severely complicated scrolling behavior, leading to both confusion and serious editor bugs.

We should offer a similar full-screen, word-processor-like writing experience to our users while preserving sensible scrolling behavior.

This is a rough mockup, but it illustrates the point. If we adopt this approach, we would need to make it appear more streamlined and would additionally need to find a place to put the save/discard/etc. buttons and the revision comment box.

Actually, the VisualEditor project is a much better precedent here. I would be *thrilled* if we updated our editor to look more like this.

Yeah, either of these would be a win. The key, though, is that we not lose functionality in the process. But going with a feel like either of these would be a great win.
