I never thought I would say this, but I'm stuck taking this intro Java class
right now, and the professor produced about 10% of the content in Explorer only.

Since the thing is "standard" on Windows, is there a way of detecting it and
making it a helper app that you can certain links to it (maybe a context menu?)

In my case, I've authored my own home page that points to many of the offending
files, so even a URL scheme like (ie:) would allow me to point mozilla to IE
when all else fails.

Either that, or I should go and beat my prof with a stick.
you should be able to drag any link from mozilla to ie. is that good enough?

also there are ActiveX wrapper plugins for netscape (which at least sort of run
in mozilla)
I'm sure Asa has a few sticks in his cube you can use...
FYI, dragging URLs from Mozilla to IE does not work, see bug 91328.
