Bookmarklets are the original add-ons, providing users and site owners with a simple way to extend page and browser functionality via a javascript: url that when run in the location bar executes in the context of the current page. Countless services including amazon's wish list, and pinterest's site pinning all rely on this mechanism. For bookmarklets to work, you need a way to select a bookmark without changing the page or current tab, in order for the context passed to the bookmarklet script to be correct.
