The concept of "Choose your own adventure" has come up in a couple of tickets that I see as currently open.

Specifically I've seen it raised in the following tickets

Same-window text plugin link target
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=867591

Hotspot plugin:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=892808

In KettleCorn we took a low-hanging fruit approach that provides a good amount of flexibility that might be worth consideration. We talked about this example on the last webmaker call, but I figured I'd document it here. Simply put, we allow users to click an image, text, or pop plugin and go to a particular time in the video. We call the target time the "jumpTime" and if it's present, a click handler is assigned to the plugin instance. Combined with the pause plugin and you can do interesting things.

Scroll to 0:15 and click to play to see it in action at the http://kettlecorn.innovation-series.com/v/6a.html

Even once you've got the hotspot plugin completed, I think a case can be made that this option adds a lot of value without complicating the interface. Food for thought if nothing else.
As pointed out, it's an idea we have explored and plan on implementing in some fashion down the line and taken some steps already with the hotspot plugin (although, that iteration isn't targeted at Webmaker and will be altered later on).

Hi Matt,
Has work begun for the hotspot plugin or is it currently just a spec? Wasn't sure what you meant by "taken steps already". We'd love to check out anything you've done with it, if you have!

Thanks,

-Joe
I've been doing work prototyping a similar idea for a partner with Seneca College Centre for Development of Open Technology. It's a slightly different idea than what is proposed here and whatever implementation we adopt would be simpler but it's the same basic idea.

I haven been implementing it against our Popcorn Maker branch before porting it to the old butter repo for them. You can see it in the link below.
