Details

We need a mechanism to improve the extraction of given and last names from plain names. This need is motivated by the existence of cases when the only information available about a contact's name is a chunk of characters or single string such as when contacts are imported from the SIM card.

This mechanism should adapt to the device locale since there are sensitive differences depending on localization and languages. For example, extracting given and last names from a name such as "A B C" would give distinct results in Spanish and English. In Spanish, it is more probable that the given name is "A" and the last name is "B C" whereas in English the given name would probably be "A B" (where B would probably be the middle name) and last name would probably be "C".

Apart from counting words, more advanced mechanisms could be considered such as considering the frequency of words as given or last names in country censuses and so on.

As a source of "inspiration", it may help to have a look at http://www-03.ibm.com/software/products/en/infosphere-global-name-management

Ups, I just saw this need-info :O Sorry, Francisco! Sadly, as you already know I am switching activities at Telefónica and I won't be able to work on this, so I am removing the need-info :(
