Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux i686; rv:20.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/20.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20130329043827

Steps to reproduce:

I have multiple accounts. When I compose and send an e-mail, the menubar can no longer be selected.

Actual results:

I move the mouse pointer over the top menubar (the text toolbar File Edit View etc.) and try to click on a menu item, and it does not register. I was able to clear this condition in either of two ways:

1. Select an e-mail (thus activating the search toolbar), then click on the [Advanced] button, which causes a separate window to popup. When I close the popup window, the menubar works again.

2. Minimize the entire MailNews window, and then restore it.

This bug is similar to a bug I encountered in Thunderbird, wherein, after a few iterations of "Right-click/Delete selected items", subsequent attempts to select any item listed in any drop-down menu (even those in the Thunderbird menubar) fail. To be clear: the drop-down menu appears, but as soon as you try to move the cursor over the menu option you want to select, the drop-down menu disappears. In other words, it behaves as if you had moved the mouse pointer off of the drop down, when in fact, you are moving it over the drop-down. Just as in this case with Seamonkey, you can clear this problem by minimizing and restoring the main window.

I reported this bug in Thunderbird at least 3 years ago, and as far as I know, it has never been fixed. One of the reasons I am (trying) to convert to Seamonkey is because I became exhausted by the chronic disregard for bugs like this on the part of the Thunderbird development team. So far, Seamonkey does not exhibit the "Right-Click/Delete selected items" problem, although I haven't used it enough yet to be sure.

FYI, this problem occurs on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Gnome2

I installed Seamonkey 2.23 on Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 Gnome2, and the problem does not occur (although, in these other two cases, there is only one e-mail account, vs. six accounts on the 10.04 platform). With the exception of this issue, Seamonkey appears to be a much more reliable and stable application than Thunderbird. It sounds like the development team for Seamonkey is much more committed to "best practices" in managing this project, and more conservative about introducing new features and un-called-for "Wizards", such as the one which caused me to abandon Thunderbird.

I believe the combination (and well conceived integration) of Browser/Mail/News/Chat in Seamonkey makes it the most valuable of all the Mozilla apps. I hope the Seamonkey team sticks with this product and keeps developing it.

Expected results:

The drop-down menu for the selected menu item should appear.
Could you try seamonkey safe mode? From the command line:
seamonkey -safe-mode

And what is the Thunderbird bug number?
