The -lpurple flag is all that gets used. -L/usr/lib and -L/$(DIST)/lib are both given so it is very possible that /usr/lib ends up taking priority when it shouldn't. To fix this I had to explicitly give the path to libpurple.so.

Not sure -L$(DIST)/lib is still needed for anything on the line you edited.
I'll try to remove it before checking in the fix.
