Which instant messaging protocol was used for the conversation? I may be wrong, but I think the link is created by Instantbird before displaying the message, rather than before sending. This behavior may be different on some protocols. Also, it's interesting to see that bugzilla also doesn't include the '-' as part of the link in comment 0.

I noticed something similar recently: in "New news from swc: GSoC Projects for 2014 <http://software-carpentry.org/blog/2014/04/gsoc-projects-2014.html>;" the link incorrectly includes the trailing > (but not the ;). These are likely edge cases that are very hard to handle.

On the behalf of Florian: Closing bugs related to the Instantbird UI as WONTFIX, as the development of the standalone chat client Instantbird has stopped. Instantbird users are encouraged to migrate to Thunderbird. The user interface of instant messaging in Thunderbird will feel familiar, as the Thunderbird IM support started as a fork of Instantbird.
