>>Project/Request Title: Virtual Performance Hero Team >>Project Overview: The mission of this team is to recognize individuals who have gone above and beyond toward fixing and improving the performance of Firefox. Currently this is only done if there are specific goals assigned to a developer. In most cases we continually regress performance and don't spend the required time to fix these regressions as we have other goals and priorities. In many cases we choose to take a performance hit based off of a new added feature or what the real impact is on the user base. This "team" will consist of engineers who have gone above and beyond their duties to make an impact on performance. We will recognize their efforts and ask them to share their story (ideally in a blog post). In many cases they will be encouraged to pay it forward by mentoring others in bugs, code reviews, team meetings so that their efforts will serve towards making a shift in the culture of development at Mozilla towards continually improving and caring about performance. >> Creative Help Needed: Copy: No Design: Yes Video: No Other: Naming help, graphics for stickers, shirts >>Creative Specs: Help in picking a team name Design a graphic/logo that can be printed as stickers Quite possibly a small run of 11x14 posters or tshirts (printed on demand) * any other suggestions are welcome here- I am just a hermit (remotie) hacker >>CTA and Design: name: * houdini fox <- something related to magic * VO2 fox (a spoof of VO2 max) <- thinking high performance * black fox <- something rad * other names might be champion, hero, dream team, etc. * open to other ideas! Graphic: * Ideally something with a fox Stickers: * quantity - a batch of 100 stickers * shape - whatever fits the image- square, rectangle, circle is just fine- circle would be cool * size - no more than 3 inches on any side, ideally no smaller than 2 inches on any side I have never done anything like this- I assume this will be an iterative process . My target date below is June 17th, that would be after we take Firefox 32 off of trunk and I could announce the plans in the platform meeting while recognizing a couple of key engineers. >>Creative Due Date: 2014-05-30 >>Launch Date: 2014-06-17 >>Mozilla Goal: Firefox Browser >>Points of Contact: ARRAY(0x7f44111da448)
Hi Joel. Thanks for getting in touch. I'm trying to get a sense of what you need - generally speaking we avoid creating distinctly new logos for specific teams or projects, but if we had a good name we could probably come up with something cool using existing branding elements. Stickers are fun, and this sounds like a worthwhile project. So I'm clear, this is less about a team in the sense of the typical organizational structure, and more in the sense that it's a group of people who have all done particularly heroic performance work on Firefox? Are these employees, community members, or both?
Hey John, Great to hear from you. This is not a real time in terms of organizational structure, but more of a set of people that have done wonderful things such as made large improvements to performance or debugged a difficult problem. Right now this is only developers (so far paid) who have checked in code- There is no limitation that it needs to be an employee or the original developer.
Thanks Joel. I'm going on PTO for the next week - let's pick this up when I'm back. We should still be ok based on your schedule.
sounds perfect
Hi Joel — John and I chatted about this and I've started to think of names. Here's my first batch to react to and kick off the discussion: Firefox Pit Crew Firefox Tuning Team Yellow Jersey Team The Peloton Codeheads (like "gearheads") The Flying Foxes Firefox Unlimited Firefox Max (Fx Max, Max Fx) The Top Tier 2 Fast 2 Firefox (OK, not that one)
I really like "The Peloton"
Thanks Matej. I like "Flying Foxes" - seems like that one lends itself to the possibility of some fun designs. Joel, what's your process for reviewing and approving the names? Does anyone else from your end need to be involved?
Flying Foxes is a good one! For reviewing the name/design I have them cc'd on here.
(In reply to Joel Maher (:jmaher) from comment #8) > Flying Foxes is a good one! For reviewing the name/design I have them cc'd > on here. Cool. I'd suggest gathering your feedback or preferences as a group and then reporting back here. Otherwise it can get a little chaotic trying to figure out next steps.

:avih, :jgriffin, any of these names stick out to you?

I like Flying Foxes as well.

I'm also good with F(lying)F(oxes). Looks like we have a winner!
Flags: needinfo?(avihpit)
Alright- that was quick and fast. John, I assume you can take Flying Foxes (or some derivation thereof) and create some cool logo!

Got it, thanks Joel. Just to confirm, the main deliverable here is a sticker, yes? (And it may sound like splitting hairs, but I'd prefer to call this a 'graphic' rather than a 'logo'.)
Flags: needinfo?(jslater)
A graphic it is. Yes a main deliverable is a sticker. I am considering a t-shirt, but maybe as this grows to be successful I can add that in at a future time.
Thanks Joel. Am assigning to Lee Tom - we'll talk this over, and will post some sticker ideas here soon.

Hi all, just wanted you to know that I'll be iterating on some sticker designs early next week - this week got the best of me, so I do not have anything to show at this time. I know we have a due date of today 5/30, so hopefully I'm not holding anything up. Apologies, stay tuned!
thanks for the update! looking forward to some designs
Checking in here to see if we have designs. The 17th is approaching fast, and I would like to have stickers available on that date.
Hi Joel, thanks for checking in. I'm working on a few directions for you and plan to have something for you to look at by EOD.
I love when "EOD" become Middle of the Day :) Here are 3 directions we can go with your sticker, Joel. Let me know what you think - I can add finishing touches and we can play with die-cuts and borders before I set up the files for print. Also, is it a requirement to have "mozilla" on the sticker? I hope you like them.
I really like option C. Mozilla doesn't have to be on the sticker, I would prefer it, but not a requirement. any of the 3 stickers stand out?

Lee, these are awesome - thanks! Joel, if I may weigh in with some advice...I've done a lot of these projects, and having everyone chime in with feedback in the bug can get messy (and confusing). Can you review with your team offline and then present your rolled-up feedback in a single post? Would make things much smoother in the long run. I actually prefer version A, but it seems like a difficult shape for a sticker. Lee, wdyt?
ok, asking offline- A is my second runner up, maybe it could be a rectangle instead of cut to the exact shape.

If you like version a. best, we could die-cut around the banner and put it on clear vinyl. These would look nice and clean on a clear background.
...the same with C. We could have the gear shape on clear, so where ever you stick it, it will look like the gear on X color surface. This option would be cheaper because circles are standard shapes whereas doing a custom die-cut will cost a bit more.
We are getting a lot of consent on #C. Of course the clear background sounds like the way to go :) Is there a realistic way to print this as a hexagon instead of a circle?
If you want the border as a hexagon, we could place the gear on top of an opaque background (c_2), but again this will be die-cut. It wouldn't make sense to pay for the die-cut if you wanted the hexagon clear, since it'll look the same as the circle version (c_1) Another mockup I made but didn't include in my first batch, is the Flying Foxes type on a off-set hexagon shape (c_3) without the gear. This too will likely be a custom die-cut. We are getting a lot of consent on #C. Of course the clear background sounds like the way to go :) Is there a realistic way to print this as a hexagon instead of a circle?
Lee, how would option C look with the regular Mozilla wordmark instead of the funky one?
I really like c2 as the hexagon shape goes together well with other hexagon shaped stickers. c_1 is just as great. If it is cheaper, it might be a better way to go. between a standard circle cut and a hexagon cut: is there a big cost difference? is there a production time difference?
Hey Joel. We usually order from http://www.stickermule.com/ - you can play around with the options there to get a sense of the pricing.
John, I think it looks pretty good with the Mozilla wordmark. If we go with the C_1 circle trim, I think it would be cool to get this on the clear sticker back so the gear shape shows up where-ever you stick it.
I see these prices: 100 circle stickers: $74 100 clear stickers: $94 100 die cut stickers: $88 I assume clear stickers is what we are talking about? ++ on the official Mozilla wordmark.
That's correct Joel. These will be both clear, and circles. Let me know what size stickers you want (3"? 4"?), and I'll start preparing the final files for the printer.
3" is a great size!
Here's your final sticker art, Joel: http://cl.ly/3W2t31441F2N Enjoy!
ok, so I can just take this to http://www.stickermule.com/ and print out what quantity I want?
- Go to http://www.stickermule.com/products/clear-stickers - Choose 3" x 3" - Choose your quantity - Upload the file I just linked you to - Then I'm guessing you'll have to make your payment :)
(In reply to Lee Tom from comment #38) > - Then I'm guessing you'll have to make your payment :) It's not like it was free until now ;) Thanks guys!
