There are guidelines for the contrast ratio between text and background color described here: http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20/.

It would be great to display somewhere in the inspector what the ratio on the current element is and what level it meets (AA, AAA), and maybe some info on the levels.

It's often hard for me to tell objectively if I've got enough contrast.
