unable to follow link on a href using explicitly file protocol:
<a href=file:/a-path-to-a-file>look at this</a>

same trouble if this is in a email.
one has to enter it manually on the URL textfield

Is this link in a web page?  if so, this is a security feature -- web content 
should _not_ load local content.  This can be disabled with a pref, of course.
