Proxy: config switching for mobile/roaming users

I am a mobile power-user who's been able to automate most of the hassle of moving from one network to another. The only problem that remains is having to drill down into the browser preferences every time I need to change proxy settings (either a different proxy or no proxy). What would be very useful is an advanced feature that would allow one to pick proxy profiles from a drop down via the toolbar. Even better, have the browser automagically select one based on some network settings (e.g. partial IP address).

You could write a proxy auto config script. We cache your current IP address though. tingley - myIPAddress isn't updated when you go offline/online, is it? Is there a bug on that?

Yeah, I think that's right. The root of that problem, i think, is bug 64857 -- dhcp changes aren't picked up automatically. I also have some memory that a perf bug was "fixed" a while back by not doing a DNS lookup every time on the local hostname and caching the result instead. This will probably need to be reversed. I had thought at one point about making a tracking bug for "Network issues for mobile users", but I'm not sure how many bugs it would actually tracking -- it seems like there's just one or two big problems.

unsure if this would be a networking or prefs rfe --punt as needed!

You want bug 88217, bug 88218, and bug 43429. Bug 43429 is the closest to general problem, so I'm proposing that be the dupe. Tingley: changes in DNS (including default domain)not being picked up are being fixed already in other bugs (there were a lot of dependencies)...
I'd love to have a "Proxy/No Proxy" button in the navigation toolbar. And I'd like an addition of the proxy setting: Not only "no proxy for ...", also the reverse: generally proxy off, and set "proxy for ...[urls]".

This really is the job of the operating system, not of the browser. In general, you shouldn't have to set up proxy settings multiple times for each Internet app you use, and this is especially the case when you often need to switch between two or more sets of settings. Mac OS has had a Location Manager for years, and Ximian has one for GNOME too. Mozilla probably doesn't support either of these (I haven't checked), but it should.
Supporting operating system level features like this is a good idea, but I think that we will inevitably want to make this work more robustly than the OS vendors do. For example, as a part of network profiling, I think we would want to possibly include PAC or a customized view of mail servers.

It's been quite some time since I originally submitted this bug, and based on the subsequent comments I feel that it may have been misinterpreted. Allow me to recast my original post as an objective comparison of behavior between Mozilla and Internet Explorer. I use my laptop both at work and at home. Internet access at work requires authentication through a proxy server. I have direct access at home. Internet Explorer doesn't require any configuration changes as I move between network scenarios, it apparently falls back to direct access if the proxy server isn't there. Mozilla requires that I "Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Proxies > (select appropriate setting) > Ok". I would even settle for a Preferences hot key and default the dialog to what I last edited. That would eliminate all the clicks (and mis-clicks) required with the mouse. Thanks for an otherwise excellent browser. I hope that one of these days I'll have the time/skills to contribute more directly.

I'd like to echo the request in Comment #6. I use a combo of ssh tunnels and proxies to access data at work, so "proxy only for ..." would be invaluable.

I filed one of the bugs closed as a duplicate of this one. It would be nice to have a small icon on the bottom bar, but a hot key combination would be great. It is really a hassle to have to do all the deep navigation with the mouse just for that one feature, especially when I have to do it multiple times a day.

RESOLVED/dupe: Paul and Darin: bug 223908 probably gives you some improved UI, but it only works w/ the existing mode selections (direct, manual, auto). *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 43429 ***
