Netscape will hang when I go to the Java applet page in Redhat 7.1 linux.

Steps of reproduce
1. Launch Netscape in Redhat 7.1 US system
2. Go to above URL

Netscape will hang.

This is not reproduciable in Redhat 6.2 system.
Tested 09-19-05 Linux build.

I am running into some similar issues with 0.9.4/NS6.1. In my case it also
hangs in Linux 7.1 when going to pages with flash content. Teruko/Patty, could
you try to go to www.moviewatcher.com for example and see if your browser hangs
there too? It has some Flash animation at the top ...

I have no Linux 6.2 to test against though.

As soon as I install Java (from the XPI pop-up when visiting a page with Java
content) then it seems like all content that will require a plugin will hang.
As soon as I remove Java from my plugins directory (by removing the java2
directory inside the plugins/ dir and eliminating the softlink to inside of it)
things start to work again ...

It might be worth testing against other versions of the JRE/plugin also. The
latest bits might have incompabilities with the old JRE/plugin combo used for
6.0/6.01
Adding PDT, because this needs the visibility and attention.

this bug appears to be demonstrated by JRE 1.3.0_01; is it demonstrated by JRE
1.3.1 also? If so, nothing's changed :-(
Arun, is new JRE 1.3.1 in Linux build already?
Teruko,

I think granrose and leaf will be able to better answer that question, so I'm
cc'ing them. I'm not entirely certain why this bug has PDT prominence, but if
it is fixed by JRE 1.3.1, then great, another argument in favor of 1.3.1!
Teruko, are you able to test this using JRE 1.3.1 for Linux from java.sun.com ?
It is available as RPM packages; thus, if it is included or not, you can obtain
it from here:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/download-linux.html
doh, in addition to above comments, cc'ing leaf and granrose for real.
Reassign to Joe as I'm leaving the role of OJI module owner.
Ressign to Joe Chou, as I am no longer working officially on OJI.

I downloaded new JRE 1.3.1 and replaced the current JRE to do the same thing.
Java applet does not hang immediatly with JRE 1.3.1, but Netscape will hang
after I went to the different applets.

Known Problems section of http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/install-linux-sdk.html

says,

Known Problems
RedHat Linux 6.2 is the officially supported Linux platform for J2SDK 1.3.1.
Limited testing has been done on other Linux operating systems, and the
following are known problems on the
non-supported platforms.

old news, RH 7.1 and java have always had problems:
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=84093
Propose we minus this for the branch, since "RH 7.1 and java have always had
problems". If QA agrees, please mark nsbranch-.

Going to www.java.com causes mozilla to hang with a fresh BRANCH build from this
morning on all Red Hat 7.1 (Dell 220's) here. :( This is likely bug 84093.

There is a known compatibility problem between recent version of mozilla, Sun
JRE 1.3 plugin the 2.4 kernel. For details, see:
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=84093

Workaround: Upgrade your Java plugin (I suggest JRE 1.4) or set this enviornment
variable before starting mozilla:
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
