Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:29.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/29.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20140506152807
Steps to reproduce:
I double clicked the top-left corner of the window.
Actual results:
The file menu opened and closed.
Expected results:
I used to be able to double click the top-left corner of Firefox to close it, just like any other application, but now it doesn't work. It looks like the File menu is too far over to the left and the normal Move/resize/restore/close/etc... menu isn't available.

I'm assuming this is in maximized mode, on Windows XP?

(and also, with the titlebar disabled in customize mode, and the menubar permanently visible?)

I get the same behaviour regardless of whether the window is maximized or not. I have the same issue on both Windows XP and Windows 7.
If I turn off the menu bar, double clicking on the top left maximizes the window instead of closing it.

AFAIK it's been a while that this behavior was introduced. I've read a discussion about this in a UX etherpad. I think UX should confirm whether it would be wanted or not.

Was this bug filed before Australis?
IMO it doesn't make sense to close the window with the current UI, since there is no affordance for it (usually there's the app icon in the upper left corner of the window, but we don't use that.

No, after. I don't know if the "app button" that we had before australis provided this functionality, but at least there was an affordance at that time.

Right. I guess we could morph the bug to suggest we should provide such an icon in non-maximized mode, at least. I would probably lean towards wontfixing this, but then, I am a user who never uses that shortcut to close applications / windows. I guess users who do use that all the time would feel differently. Want to make a decision? :-)

Wontfix it is then.
We already have some space issues in the tab bar on Windows. Adding an icon would reduce that space even more. It would also prevent us from doing things like expanding the click area of the first tab in maximized mode (which we should totally do - I'll file a bug).

FWIW Google Chrome does close when you click on the left edge (in non-maximized mode).
