We are going to need a landing page for webmaker.org/badges that lists the badges that are available to users, including web literacy badges, Hive badges, supermentor, and mentor badges.
Yes. Shoot. I thought we were going to be able to default this section to the only existing badge (super mentor) but it appears more badges are needed asap.

Is this something we can do a serious MVP on, to eliminate the need for design resource on this?

Perhaps we can repurpose the Badges view on Profiles for this.
Flags: needinfo?(kate)
This is not needed immediately, since for now we can just use the super mentor badge -- however, I think for the summer it will be. I've scheduled it for the june 15 milestone ([webmakerbadges][launch])

Maybe others (Matthew maybe?) could work on this if you're swamped

Kate, just discussed this with Brett & Matt – the user story of people discovering ad hoc badges is not something we've committed to supporting right now. People will be rewarded these badges through a claim link, not having come randomly to badges.webmaker.org.

Let's just do something completely barebones (a makerstrap list of available badges) for June 15 if that page needs to exist for the URL structure, but let's not dedicate design to this at the moment (Matthew is focusing on Login, he has limited time before PTO & pat leave).

Moving this to [2014Q3].

Ok, sounds good to me

* Cassie: we could also consider adding copy and links to these badges on the new "Community" landing page you proposed? (if that's still in scope? please ignore if not.)

* Might be a decent quick fix, in terms of a place for links that doesn't require any additional design work.
Flags: needinfo?(cassie)
* Cassie: do we still want this?

* Or do you want to mark this one wontfix, and just add links to the Community page? To try and reduce workload.

Let's keep this for now.

Depends on: 1030254
Any update on this?
* Cassie's on PTO til July 7
* So realistically, probably won't get shipped on [July11] train. Probably the following. But let's leave it for now.
In Comment 1 Cassie says "Is this something we can do a serious MVP on, to eliminate the need for design resource on this?"

For MVP, perhaps we could just list all the badges available at https://webmaker.org/badges - literally just:

1. Badge graphic (linked to relevant badge page)
2. Description of badge

Would that work?
No longer depends on: 1030254
* Yep, that sounds about right. Confirmed with Cassie today that design work for this is in scope for [july11]. Which means the page will be built and deployed on [july25] train
Excellent. The simplest of pages (e.g. the Badges admin list) will work as an MVP, I reckon!
* Cassie: the new "firedrill" landing pages we've been asked to create knock this one to the next train. Correct?

Just to say that, thanks to Laura, we do have a stopgap: https://training.webmakerprototypes.org/en/badges/

But that doesn't include the 15 Web Literacy 'maker' badges. So we're blocked on launching those until we have a landing page on wm.org.

Great, glad to hear that. It's difficult to point people towards what we offer at the moment in terms of a holistic package as the only way to grok that is in the admin interface. :-)

Adding a cursory first stab at the landing page. A lot more has to be incorporated and considered, but after a chat with Chloe today about designing pathways and getting access to some of her old work, I feel this is juuuuuuust starting to become a little more crisp.
Flags: needinfo?(cassie)
nice first stab! I see the implied option to issue your own badge, are these what will populate the "community badge" section of the page, or is that section referring to something else? Or are all these sections just placeholders?

Realizing that this is just a design mock-up, I'm still wondering if anyone knows whether there has been any progress on the back end to make that functionality a reality?
Great stuff. Have added lots of comments. :-)
Whiteboard: [design-debt][webmakerbadges][launch][2014Q3][badges][ux] → [badges][sep19]
* this is awesome. To be clear, as per Robert's point: "issue your own badge" is not in scope for this.
Adding an attempt to order the badges in a way that goes from easiest > hardest (learner to contributor).

with lightweight storytelling and read a bit like a guide for users to chart their journey.
Now as a redpen so you can easily leave comments. https://redpen.io/p/fw5d879b7a2ad69fbd
Some questions/comments on Michelle's redpen. Was super helpful to see the story aspect.

* Like how you displayed the web lit badges as smaller set, but wonder if it makes them seem like smaller asks. A 'hmmm' to consider.
* Is a hive badge the culminating badge? I'd argue this could be confusing for users from a brand perspective
* Perhaps missing the cyclical organic aspect to badge discovery, and how people might come into the flow at any point. The 1/2/3 perhaps was not intentional, but I think users (especially new ones) would interpret it as linear.

I'm working on a new iteration, will post here when ready!
Love the direction this is all going. :-)

I've commented on the redpen, but just wanted to surface here that it would be great to have pathways that fork and depend upon user interest.

I wrote about that here: http://dmlcentral.net/blog/doug-belshaw/scaffolding-web-literacy-through-learning-pathways
New iterations if you haven't seen them yet on Redpen are here:

I love the direction this is heading, but feel at this point we need to get a landing page out of the door.

Perhaps *literally* just a list of badges for the time being at webmaker.org/badges - followed by meta-level discussions about what we're trying to achieve here? :-)
I'm going to meet with Michelle next week in Toronto and we'll figure out a plan for getting something launched.
* Sounds good. Moving to [oct3]
Whiteboard: [design] [badges][sep19] → [design] [badges][oct3]
Perhaps we need a badge working group?
I'm going to +1 Doug's "lets make a list page first". Based on the most recent design, the V3, the first page:

https://redpen.io/dne589a05f73b628de

is doing something we've needed for awhile. This ol' thing: https://training.webmakerprototypes.org/en/badges/ was filling that need because we are constantly asked by community members "Where can I see all the badges you have?" Now we're taking screenshots of the badge admin b/c that page is outdated. https://imgur.com/AdXR6ok

The rest of this work (e.g. the other designs) is starting to dive into our potent need for pathways. Pathways work is begun and practiced through the Hives, Training and our theoretical work - but we never put weight behind mapping them out (or documenting them well). It's the whole reason I made this: https://laura.makes.org/thimble/web-literacy-learning-pathways so I could, for myself, envision potential linkages.

Chloe did a lot of thinking around pathway types, and the Discovery project started to allow us to document pathways, but it was a prototype. Maybe we should consider asking the working group to get pathways from being a buzzword to being pedagogically sound?
* Amira has a smart potential add for this page. That we should consider prioritizing this iteration because: 10K
* GOAL: make it easy for educators or others with large groups to bulk upload / issue many badges at once.
* This matters to us because: it helps us rack up larger contributor numbers all at once.
* Amira: can you elaborate here? It's also ok if this doesn't make it on this train -- we can always consider adding it later
Flags: needinfo?(amira)
Agreed that things that help us get to 10k is good. I suggest we prioritise:

* Getting a page up ASAP that lists all the Webmaker badges we have. As Laura says, having to screenshot the badges admin interface is sub-optimal.

* Adding the 15 Web Literacy competency badges to the top-right of each competency page (e.g. https://webmaker.org/badges/remixing-maker would be added to https://webmaker.org/resources/literacy/weblit-Remix)

I think it's awesome that we're thinking about badge pathways, but let's have a wider conversation and not rush it: sometimes what you go with first dictates where you end up. :-)

Need to address some of Kate's concerns. Also have meetings planned with Ben M & other badges stakeholders this week to figure out if we can move on getting an MVP version of this live.

Punting due to EOY snippet and Fall Campaign work.
Whiteboard: [design] [badges][oct17] → [design] [badges][nov7]
Hi Cassie, I know that there's other more pressing work to do, but please (please!) can we have literally a list of badges on webmaker.org ASAP

It doesn't have to be foregrounded or even linked to via the home page. It also doesn't have to feature badge pathways. Just a list of Webmaker badges would help *massively* with MozFest and with wider community engagement. We're a bit hamstrung by having to link individually to 30+ badges at the moment.

Please do reconsider. I know it's not a design priority. But, I'd argue, it's a huge community engagement one. :-)
How about we punt the design piece, but still make a list as Doug suggests? Our team is telling people about badges like "Oh yeah, we have that badge, I swear" and meanwhile being pushed to issue more badges for our 10K goal.

We should make a list here http://badges.webmaker.org (or here https://webmaker.org/badges ) pre Mozfest, just a list (copy/paste design/code from the admin panel, it's fine!). We will be and have been telling people about badges a lot, we need this landing page, please, let's ship SOMETHING.
I'm as disappointed as the rest of ya! Not just design priority in consideration here, though. Design and frontend resourcing are both maxed out on fall campaign and end of year engagement work leading up to mozfest.
OK, well as Laura says we need *something* for MozFest, so I've made a start on https://blog.webmaker.org/badges
Cool! This looks great, glad you're finding something that works for you.

Your link from '15 Web Literacy ‘maker’ badges' is broken, though.
Yeah, building it live so replacing that with the actual badges now.
Hey all, just adding context on timing. We'll definitely do this page but it's postponed until the next heartbeat. The fall campaign and the EOY took priority this time around.

If someone wants to make a wiki page or blog post about it for Mozfest, let's do it. But wm.org/badges page will take a few more weeks.
OK, MVP badge page done: http://blog.webmaker.org/badges

Webmaker badges has been deprecated for a while now. We're working towards retiring the Webmaker Product on bugzilla, so I'm closing this issue.
