Moving this from an email discussion.
CONTEXT
Webmaker Training: http://training.webmakerprototypes.org
Badge diagram: http://goo.gl/6vTj4Z
Michelle:
>The main reason we're proposing these mini badges for training is that otherwise we will hemorrhage contributor info.
>We need a way to:
>i) track what someone does in training and
>ii) give them clear recognition for completing a module.
>This will give us data on user activity, if they convert to being a mentor, and otherwise incentivize them to continue the modules.
>This would have been in Badgekit if it were ready now. But it's not. Rather than lose this data, we're proposing P2PU badges. They're quick and they work. We can get emails and bulk add / migrate people once our version of Badgekit is live. Or at least log them in the ad-hoc logger.
>If P2PU is a complete non-option, we can have people pledge for a badge now that isn't awarded until after June 15, and issue it then from Badgekit.
The meta-level piece that would solve the blocker here, I feel, would be to allow badges to be moved from the existing Open Badges backpack to be displayed on webmaker.org profiles.

After a conversation with Adam, Michelle and Laura, we've got another option here.
1. Agree on image and criteria for a badge issued for participating in each week of Webmaker Training. See Bug 1010267 (images) and Bug 1010264 (criteria)
2. Create new space in Discourse where people can pledge for these badges.
3. Badges issued via BadgeKit when it comes online in June.
How does that sound? :-)

We can totally have a discussion topic on this in discourse however I think pledges should happen in a more structured way to save us time/effort. My suggestion is to wrap all the context, images, details, in discourse with a link out to a google form where we ask people to give their wm.o email and quick links to evidence.
This should make life a lot easier for us to issue from BK once ready. We can easily parse structured data, not so much a discussion thread.

In offline conversation, I understand that Kate said it didn't make sense to add the training badges to webmaker.org's badge features, and that Brett's thinking is that the pragmatic thing is to go back and do the P2PU thing.
[I agree w/ fuzzy that a google spreadsheet is a better way to manage the data than a freeform forum, assuming we're talking about hundreds of names or more).]
The only other path I could think of would be to make a special purpose page on the instance of bagekit that Erik is driving, but he's out sick today.
Until and unless Erik + Emily come up with another plan, I propose that we use the minimally-coupled model:
a) We use P2PU to issue the training badges as originally planned
b) fuzzy sets up a google form to give people to claim the mentor badge at the end
c) someone (who?) will review that form and figure out whether those claims should be granted, and will (manually?) issue those mentor badges using the existing webmaker badge system.
In this scenario, only mentor badges show up in webmaker profile. The training profiles stick around in P2PU, and we can figure out later (if we care) how to move them over.
Does this plan sound reasonable for everyone?

So I agree with this. Ultimately I'd love to give this training badges out with the Webmaker badging instance, but the timing seems too tight with the Webmaker Badges beta. Kate's goal is to begin beta testing this starting this week or next, and then push it to product June 15th. It seems like it's too many moving parts to try and add these additional badges by then, and we may learn things about the stability of the Webmaker front end or training that we need to adjust.
Also, in offline conversation with Laura, there is some benefit to issuing these badges from P2PU - new users from that community may find out about Webmaker that otherwise would not have.
Since this entire round of training is a prototype, and in collaboration with P2PU, I think it's fine that they are issued on a separate platform, especially considering that the final mentor badge will be on Webmaker.
It's worth noting that at this time, the badges won't be "portable" - currently Webmaker.org badges don't push to any backpack, and the current scope is for them to be discoverable on a users profile. So we'll need to acknowledge that those badges will live on seperate platforms.

Thanks David and Brett for the comments. This seems like a good solution, and I'm totally fine with the Webmaker Mentor badge being the only one that ends up on Webmaker.org badges.
I'll get on with creating the badges on P2PU and work with Laura to inform people of how to claim them. We'll work with Fuzzy to create a workflow for those count towards a Mentor badge in a way that makes sense from a data collection point of view.
Longer term, it would be great if people could display non-Webmaker badges on webmaker.org, though - right? :-)

Pending design review from Cassie, these are ready to be issued. Full details: https://teach.etherpad.mozilla.org/training-badges

Re: "Longer term, it would be great if people could display non-Webmaker badges on webmaker.org, though - right? :-)" I agree and am curious to hear others' thoughts.
