I'm using FF for years and have already had troubles, occuring on several PCs, with browser windows displaying nothing (grey screen). Now, I'm also facing this black screen issue. I'll attach screenshots in order to show what happens. The workaround is to close and reopen FF. I let my computer running several days without shutdowning it. I use lots of windows and tabs at the same time, keeping them from one session ot another. This problem has got a lot worse since I have a 4K screen. It may take less than a day for FF to become unable to display pages correctly. It even crashed once this month. I have tried to disable hardware acceleration, but it changes nothing. I have updated my driver (nvidia) to the latest stable version, but it changes nothing. User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:37.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/37.0 "version": "37.0.2" "appBuildID": "20150415140819" I can attach a raw health report if useful.
Note that, in order to accomplish this screenshot, I've had a black screen, then I played with resize buttons and maybe scroll. So, you can see several problems, not only the "black screen" effect : -sliders are not redrawn at the right place (they are in the middle of the view) -title bar is not redrawn and therefor incomplete -blank area at the bottom and the right of the view -black screen effect reduced to only a top left part of the view -the black screen effect is curiously split into 3 columns
It happens that the black screen effect arose when completing this bug ! Another example of its appearance. I have moved the client view hence you can see that redraws are done on the top part of the view, on the bottom part as well, and, curiously, partially on the middle black area.

Updated healthreport, as FF just crashed. Maybe the crash report can help.
Attachment #8605164 - Attachment is obsolete: true
Not sure this is the original bug, the black rectangles are more inline with bug 1158838 and others like that.
With latest 42.0 release, I have not had black screen syndrom so far. I cannot remember when it started to not display black screens, because I've not used FF a lot for months on my main PC due to its unstability. I therefore can't tell if bug 1158838 partial fix is in action. It's clear that something has been done that has a tremendous positive impact on the occurence of the problem in my case : it's gone. I consider the problem fixed on my side. Can't tell about Brendt's in order to close the bug.
After weeks of not happening, it happened again today with 42.0...
Assuming the information in comment 8 is still current, can you please update to the latest NVIDIA stable driver? If it happens again then please try running with a new Firefox profile with no add-ons installed. If the issue doesn't return then it's likely that one of your installed add-ons is a factor in this bug.
Driver updated. We'll see.
Happened again. Deactivated all extensions and plug-ins, using the same profile.
(In reply to SR from comment #14) > Happened again. Deactivated all extensions and plug-ins, using the same > profile. Thanks, I'm not sure what to suggest next. Milan, could you please suggest how to debug this further?

I'm sorry, my previous answer was unclear. The problem arose after driver update. I now have deactivated extensions/plug-ins, and I'm waiting, isolated in a non-flash land, for a new occurence.
Did not wait too much for the problem to happen again. I attached the about:support details FWIW.
Looks like there are some failures in about:support. Milan, can you please take a look?
Just a guess : could it be because I am using a 32-bit firefox and process is shown using >3GB RAM in Windows task manager ? After today's blackout, I've switched to Cyberfox in order to test a 64-bit version.
No more black screen so far. Probably a memory exhaustion symptom.
Brendt, have you seen this problem since your last comment two years ago?

Good day Wayne. i have since then upgraded my system and am using a 64bit build of Firefox. since then, i have made sure not to leave FF open all weekend though. i do have a 32bit version installed on another pc, i will leave it open this weekend and let you know how it goes, it has just updated to 48.0.2 this morning.
Good day. i left FF open the entire weekend again with all tabs open. this morning there was no blank screen, all tabs were working. thank you.
