User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; WOW64; rv:29.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/29.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20140506152807

Steps to reproduce:

I use Tags. As they were created they did not sort alphanumerically.

Actual results:

I tried different methods of sorting manually because order would change if tags were removed and then recreated in such a fashion as to have them sorted. The problem with this approach is that the results were transient.

Expected results:

Tags should appear alphanumerically without doing anything special.

I did get a suggestion from a user: "If you open up the Bookmark Library however and click the drop down of 'Tags', they are in alphabetical order." That DOES NOT happen. There is NO BOOKMARKS LIBRARY, as such. I did get support from another user which required additional effort to get a sorted result. Unfortunately the result was transient. I occasionally revisit this issue since a couple years ago and thought by now some updated release would have Tag sorting capability, but that has not happened as yet. Microsoft's Internet Explorer, by the way, sorts automatically. I did have a comment by another user that also wished this was built into Firefox.
I hope that in some new release of Firefox in the not too distant future the tag sorting will have been taken care of.
There is also another issue that has gone unresolved, so I'll bring it out here, although it is not related to this report. Identical Bookmarks are appearing.

The Library he was talking about is the one you get if you select Show all bookmarks, or Show all history or Show all download from the respective menus. Or you may use the ctrl+shift+b shortcut.

I'd like to understand where you are trying to get sorted tags, since in the tags textfields they are sorted, in the Library they are sorted... could you please provide steps or a screenshot showing this unordered list?
I cannot send you a screen shot. But I can describe my issue, which should be good enough.

To access Tags I always use View>Sidebar>Bookmarks. The reason for this is easy access. The Tags (Recent) and Bookmarks for a panel on the left side of my browser, rather than a separate window, which is the case when selecting; Bookmarks>Show All Bookmarks, which is in alphanumeric order AT THE TOP END. However the Bookmarks listed under each Tag category ARE NOT SORTED. These should be also by Name. It is necessary to do this manually each time by selecting the Name category at the top of the list; but can’t be done under View>Sidebar>Bookmarks.

I consider having this somewhat identical Show All Bookmarks and another list from View>Sidebar>Bookmarks to be confusing duplication. Why can’t View>Sidebar>Bookmarks be sorted properly and do away with Bookmarks>Show All Bookmarks. I see no useful purpose for this duplication. I’ve never understood, either, why two versions of History are in the menu system; History & Show All History. I find this unnecessarily confusing. I would think, in order to keep the interface simple these duplications containing much the same thing should be eliminated.

I would think, though I’m not a programmer, that simplifying/integrating the interface would also make any future changes to Firefox easier. As it is the appearance is a hodge-podge that has been cobbled together.

Thank you for your response,

I have added a screenshot which will show the unsorted bookmark list within the virtual bookmark folder "Tags".

It's a test which I've made today.

Steps:

Adding URLs to my unsorted bookmarks with tag "Test"

In exact this order:

1. URL: [http://www.heise.de] Name: [heise.de]
2. URL: [http://dnews.com] Name: [dnews.com]
3. URL: [http://www.amd.com] Name: [amd.com]
4. URL: [http://www.zdnet.de] Name: [zdnet.de]
5. URL: [http://www.microsoft.com] Name: [microsoft.com]

- - -

After adding the URLs, the sort order of the bookmarks in the Tags-folder is:

1. zdnet.de
2. dnews.com
3. amd.com
4. heise.de
5. microsoft.com

- - -

Not sorted by name
Not sorted by url
Not sorted by date added
Not sorted by last used

Sort Order ??? (undefinable)

- - -

Last but not least - this sort order is unchangeable. :-(

- - -

The sort order of the bookmark list whitin the Tags-folder should be always alphanumerically.

Thanks

unsorted bookmark list in virtual "tags" folder
yes, the sorting must be like that (there is one sorting clearly, just that it's not user-friendly) due to technical constraints.
Though, we are in the process of rewriting tags, the work will be done in dependencies of bug 424160. After the rewrite we should be able to make the sorting correct (likely by most recent)
But it would be great to also have an option to sort them alphanumerically instead of "most recent".

Any ETA for the rewrite or workaround?

no, but we have an active (volunteer) contributor working on it, so I hope soon :)
