I think this is a bug, but have not tried to reproduce.
In our community call a Webmaker Trainee was trying to figure out why he was getting a 404 on: https://darren_alexander.makes.org/thimble/LTM1OTc5MjY0/darren-alexander
he said "the make works fine, now secure, but linking to it goes 404--and yet it works even now"
I went digging and found:
https://darren_alexander.makes.org/thimble/NjQ3NDk1Njg=/darren-alexander
https://darren_alexander.makes.org/thimble/LTExOTg2NTM0NA==/darren-alexander
both of which worked for me. I sent them along, and he tried to post into the Training, but it's funky weird and doesn't link out. You can see it doesn't thumbnail:

He pointed out that he has an underscore, possibly problematic in a URL, and I'm wondering if indeed, we are hitting a bug b/c of it.

Yeah, some URL parsers don't accept _'s as valid characters. Twitter is another example of a site that doesn't accept _'s in the subdomain part either.

I've filed a follow-up proposal to solve this issue by not allowing users to create their user accounts with underscores in the same. I'll mark this bug as closed, and we'll see what happens with my proposal.
