User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.9; rv:29.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/29.0 (Beta/Release) Build ID: 20140506152807 Steps to reproduce: Open pages that contain Flash content Actual results: Here's a list of all the Flash crashes on OSX Mavericks 10.9.3, Firefox 29.0.1 and Flash 13.0.0.214. Hardware acceleration disabled in Flash and in Firefox. (Believe me, I've tried just about everything short of a reset) See troubleshooting info at: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1002804?utm_campaign=questions-reply&utm_medium=email&utm_source=notification As you can see, this is happening WAY too frequently. There's been a big jump in problems on the Mac with the latest Flash version (13.0.0.214), as compared with previous versions: https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/api/SuperSearch/?plugin_version=13.0.0.214&platform=Mac+OS+X From this and looking at your crash stacks, this is almost certainly a Flash bug. It's also true that there are a disproportionate number of these on FF 29.0.1 -- so it's possible there's also a bad interaction with that version of Firefox. But the crashes/hangs all happen in Flash code.
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
Flash 13.0.0.214 was released on 5/13/2014.
FYI: You can see that about:crashes shows that the majority of these crashes only just started a day or two ago.
The crash reports that were submitted by the original reporter are for the following signature. It would be great if we could update the bug to clarify the issue that they're encountering. That said, this signature is extremely infrequent: https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/list?product=Firefox&signature=hang+%7C+libsystem_kernel.dylib%400x16b42 According to crash-stats, there are 11 instances of this crash reported over the last week with only 9 unique reporters. Assuming 10% throttling, we're looking at 90 instances of the crash across the entire Mac population over the last week. If this were a bad generalized problem, we'd see a much higher volume of reports, which makes me wonder about what makes these machines unique. What we typically see in these instances is that there is third-party interaction in play. Various internet security packages, privacy plug-ins and video scraping utilities attempt to hook into Flash Player processes, for instance. It may be content-specific as well. It's also interesting that the stacks are pretty mangled. It's clear that there are symbols present in the system because some stuff is getting resolved, but there are a lot of raw offsets, making me think that memory is corrupted by the time the crash happens. Information on the steps necessary to reproduce the problem would be very useful. It would also be good to know if the issue is still happening with Firefox running in Safe Mode, and the output from about:support and about:plugins would be really useful in trying to build a configuration that experiences this problem.

Yeah, that's a lot of extensions, plug-ins and modified defaults. I'm definitely curious about whether the problem persists on a fresh Firefox profile with all other add-ons and extensions disabled.
Also, if you haven't rebooted since the problems have started, I'd start there.
Restarted in Safe Mode. Went to BBC new, CNN, FoxNews.. All heavy Flash sites. No problem. Went to The Blaze The Daily Caller both crashed Flash.
Cool, please submit those crash reports and see if the signature summary matches the original ones you submitted.
Yup, I did a few moments ago.. Submitted one. 2BB1ED1D-BA00-4419-A42A-67A7A29F095E 5/23/14 8:12 PM
That ID isn't submitted. Please click on it. It will open a new window, and the id you pasted will change to start with bp-something-something. The link to the page that gets opened is what I'm looking for.
FWIW, I've been trying to make this crash for the last 10-15 minutes with both Firefox 28 and 29.0.1 on my MacOS 10.9.2 machine. I have 10 tabs open between Daily Caller and Blaze (mostly playing video where it's free), and I fired up a couple test DRM videos just to be sure that it wasn't something there.
I'm going to wipe out my profile and re-create it. This is getting frustrating. :( I did a backup with FEBE and I'll restore all the extensions and used plugins.
Wiping out my profile and starting fresh didn't help at all. There was a comment in the forums about an extension, https-Everywhere, that was causing this issue. I'm not seeing it. IMHO, it's a Flash problem. Here's a URL that crashed both Firefox and Safari but played just fine in Google Chrome. http://video.foxnews.com/v/3584228020001/meet-the-us-navys-cake-boss/?intcmp=obnetwork#sp=show-clips mike
Sorry, I could have saved you some time there. If you need to do this in the future, you can create a new Firefox profile to use temporarily and then just switch back to your preferred profile. To be clear, I'm not asking you to jump through hoops because I don't believe it's a problem. I'm trying to come up with a reproducible case that we can attach a C++ debugger to. If we can reproduce it, it's usually really easy to turn around a fix. If we can't reproduce it, the best we can do is make guesses and push out blind fixes that we hope might work. This is unlikely to get you a satisfactory resolution. For what it's worth, this video also plays fine for me. I'm running the channel in the background in both Firefox and Safari and it's played through a couple videos and commercials. For what it's worth, Firefox and Safari share the NPAPI plug-in version of Flash Player. Chrome uses the PPAPI version, which is pretty different. Off the top of my head, I can't remember if I'm curious to know whether disabling Hardware Acceleration makes the crash go away. Please disable Hardware Acceleration in Flash Player by right-clicking on Flash content and choosing Settings. Click the left-most tab and uncheck Enable Hardware Acceleration. If that's the case, I'd like to track down the exact make and model of your hardware to see if we can reproduce the issue there. Thanks!
* Off the top of my head, I can't remember if (premature save) HW acceleration is enabled in Chrome; however, I'm seeing comparable CPU usage across the three browsers.
Hi guys, Yup, I know that Chrome kinda does it's own thing with Flash. Just wanted to add the datapoint. (FWIW, I'm a s/w geek/IT guy/sometimes coder that really sucks at it. So you can go full geek if needed) :) H/W acceleration is turned off in Firefox and in the Flash plugin. Same issue. H/W is a 2013 Macbook Pro, 16GB, SSD, Core i7.
Note that I also uninstalled Flash (using the Adobe uninstaller) and re-installed it fresh.
Bug filed with Adobe. This is ridiculous how **** their software is. Bug #3767474
And now? It looks like a system reboot has cleared this up. <facepalm>
I've closed the bug on the Adobe side. Glad we could help.
I'm closing a lot of bugs which are filed as Adobe Flash bugs which are either irrelevant, not actionable, or not serious enough to track in the Mozilla bug tracker. For the most part, Flash bugs should be filed in Adobe bugbase, and we'll only track a few highly-critical issues in the Mozilla tracker.
