There's a point, when making the toolbox smaller, at which the labels on the tabs start being more trouble than they're worth: http://i.wonoes.com/5x7tayezl.png We should responsive-design them away earlier than that. https://ffdevtools.uservoice.com/forums/246087-firefox-developer-tools-ideas/suggestions/5896758-make-inspector-tabs-responsive-when-the-tools-are
Wow. 4 years without a fix. I really can't believe that this does not annoy anyone else.. I mean someone made the icons disappear on smaller screens. So, why doesn't the text disappear instead of the icons? This makes sooo much more sense. Because the text is almost impossible to read but the icons stay clear even on very small screens. Example from FF 58.0.2: https://i.imgur.com/yjvJ83W.jpg
Product: Firefox → DevTools

The current, new solution of completely removing tabs is not very user friendly too. At the moment, when resizing the developer tools, tabs will always keep the icon and the text, but if there is not enough space, tabs are pushed into the "double arrow" list, where they are completely hidden until you click that double arrow icon.
I still stand with my proposal to show the icons only if the space is unsufficient to display all text.

The UX has been improved as lot since this bug was reported and the tab-bar is not supporting a drop down showing tabs that don't fit the current visible area. Making it easy for the user see all tabs even if the browser is small.

Any other improvements/suggestion, might be reported as separate bugs.
