Details

From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC; en-US; rv:0.9.4) Gecko/20010913 BuildID: 2001091311 I have on pop account. If a new mail arrives it will show up in the message list, but clicking on any massage will leave the message window blank. Quitting Mozilla and starting it again everything is fine and I can view both the old and new messages. This makes Mozilla absolutely useless as a mailreader for the mac. (Same happens with Netscap 6.1, but I get "Unkown Error 80004005" when clicking on any message). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Create a new pop account 2. Send an email to this account 3. Click on "Get messages" Actual Results: Message window is empty Expected Results: Mail content displayed in messge window.
Reporter, this WorksForMe using the same build to access my POP account. Can you provide more detailed information about this problem? (Try reproducing it using a new Mozilla user profile, for example; reconfigure your POP account therein, and start your instructions from that point.)
Summary: cannot veiw emails after new mail arrived → Cannot view emails after new mail arrived
This makes no difference, I trashed all my preferences (the entire mozilla folder) and started from scratch. However, I noted some additional points: 1) When I click on new messages it will first ask me for my password and the buttons in this window are only halve visible (cosmetic problem) 2) Then the status bar wil start rotationg very fast. It will say "Connect: ..." and then "Receiving Message" and the message will show up in the message list. Then the status bar rotates only very slowly, but it still rotates. Also the mozilla icon ist still animated. Shouldn't it stop once the message is downloaded? It almost looks as if it is waiting for further input from the server? Here are some further details on my setup: The pop server is a standard redhat 7.2 box. However, I do not connect directly but tunnle localhost:pop3 vi MacSSH to the server. Could this be causing problems (same setup works fine with Netscape 4.78)
Gerald, trashing the Mozilla folder doesn't create a new User Profile. Your Mozilla User Profiles are stored in Documents/Mozilla/Profiles. There's no need to Trash that, though. Just go into the Mozilla application folder and double-click "Mozilla Profile Manager". That will enable you to create a new profile temporarily for testing purposes. Do that, and recreate your Mail account therein, and check if the problem still occurs.
I did trash the "Documents/Mozilla" folder;-)
Gerald, do you have access to another computer? If so, try to reproduce using it.
I did some further investigations: It is a communication problem with the pop server over a ssh tunnel. If I make a direct connection to the pop srever everything is fine. If I make the connection trough an ssh tunnel it looks like mozilla does not realize that the pop session terminated and waits forever (blocking my mailbox such that I cannot view any messages). To reproduce: 1) Install MacSSH (http://www.macssh.com/) 2) Configure "SSH2->Method: Local port forward" with Local port: 110 Remote host: pop.company.com Remote port: 110 3) Setup standard pop account in mozilla and use "127.0.0.1" as pop server. 4) Send yourself a test message and try to retieve it. As I saied, I use this setup with Netscape 4.x ever since and it always worked!
Summary: Cannot view emails after new mail arrived → pop3 over ssh tunnel does not work
Gerald, If possible, try it with some other e-mail clients, too, like Outlook Express or Eudora, just to make sure it's strictly a Mozilla problem.
Whiteboard: SSH Port Forwarding/POP issue?
It works fine with Outlook 5.02 and Netscape 4.x.
Reporter, can you still reproduce this using 0.9.5?
Still doesn't work in 0.9.5. It worked with a small test mail. However it still fails with larger mails.
*** Bug 106916 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Gerald, can you still reproduce this problem using Mozilla 0.9.6? Also, what version of MacSSH are you using? Can you reproduce the problem using the latest version, 2.1fc2? Is your OS software completely up-to-date? Additionally, I have edited the Summary to better reflect Gerald's Additional Comment #6 on this bug. Finally, guessing this is more appropriately Mail Back End than Mail Front End, and so changing Component.
Component: Mail Window Front End → Mail Back End
Summary: pop3 over ssh tunnel does not work → POP session termination fails via SSH port-forwarding tunnel
Whiteboard: SSH Port Forwarding/POP issue?
Reporter: Are you still seeing this with a current build?
I switched to the OS X version of mozilla and I don't have this problem under the OS X version.
Marking WFM. Feel free to reopen if this happens again.
