https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Firefox_OS/Developing_Firefox_OS/Localizing_Firefox_OS is pretty good on the technical aspects and process, but it doesn't cover best-practices about how to localize for mobile and fx os. Something about how to shorten strings would be good. Like taking advantage of context to only localize the string in part, if it's clear in the context. The use of abbreviations, too. Also, there are guidelines for how to translate strings used by screen readers, how to detect them (ariaLabel for one, comments for others), and that they should be terse, but not use abbreviations. MarcoZ Pike: Terse yes, but no abbreviations, no. MarcoZ Pike: The main reason being that different synthesizers treat abbreviations differently. Some may expand etc. to "et cetera" by default, others may not. We might even see Braille displays down the road. Starting with a bug to get some feedback from Chris and Jeff on how to add that to the structure of the document, or if we should split that up.
Hi there, Sorry for taking so long to get back to you on this. We have a whole host of localization info available for Firefox OS. First of all, this for general apps l10n: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Apps/Build/Localization This for general Moz l10n: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Localization These for Firefox OS/Gaia specific l10n: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Firefox_OS/Developing_Gaia/localization_code_best_practices https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Firefox_OS/Developing_Gaia/Localizing_Firefox_OS (Stas/Zibi wrote a lot of interesting new stuff recently.) So it sounds like you've got two bits of content you feel are missing: some content best practice stuff, and some l10n a11y stuff. The former could be added to here: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Localization/Localization_content_best_practices ? For the a11y stuff, I don't think we have anywhere specific to put that yet. We could create a new article. Would the content be application to l10n in general, of is it specific to Apps, or even FxOS apps?
Recently the app localization section got updated: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Apps/Build/Localization I'm closing this bug for now, as the content is now much improved.
