When you grab a message in the thread pane and drag the message over top of the folder pane, the folder pane begins to leave traces of "selected" areas. You have to drag it over a few times for this effect to occur, but it has occurred ever since the folder pane was moved to an outliner. Any kind of refresh fixes this problem (another window coming on top and then refocusing the mail window, minimizing & then maximizing, rolling the window up & then unrolling, doing anything in the folder pane to force a refresh).
