If I don't read any newsgroups in Thunderbird for several weeks, and then click on a newsgroup in the folder pane, then Thunderbird appears to download the latest messages, but after this the message list and message preview pane are blank (see screenshot).  If I then click on a mail folder or another newsgroup, and then back on the first newsgroup, the new messages get displayed as expected.

Reproducibility: Always

Steps to reproduce:
1. Don't read any newsgroups for several weeks
2. Click on a newsgroup

Observed behaviour:
3. Thunderbird downloads the new messages, but afterwards the message list and message preview pane are blank, as in the attached screenshot.

Expected behaviour:
3. Thunderbird should download the new messages and then display all the old and newly downloaded messages in the message list.

Is your workaround steps to 
3. click on a different newsgroup B
4. click back on "original" newsgroup A

If so, it is likely that compact has started. It tends to start when a newsgroup is clicked, and it tends to clear the message list.

Yes, that's my workaround.  I think it might be true that the folder gets compacted when I first view it.  However, I don't think this ought to result in a blank message list -- or at least, it shouldn't remain blank after the compacting is complete.

correct, it should not.  bug 677093 mentions a prompt, but the prompt has been disabled by most users
