Hi Matej-
We are working with the Fx engineers to whitelist the https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/sync/ page to allow users to open the menu panel to sign up for Sync directly from a button on the page. (As is possible currently on firstrun and whatsnew (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/29.0/firstrun/)
Therefore, we should rethink the text currently on that page.
Do you want to take a stab at it? Set up time to chat if you want to talk about it!
Thx,
Jen

Is it 4 steps we want to revise? Does that mean we don't want to say where the menu is anymore and just have them click something to open it?
There are a couple of other issues on this page:
• The tracking of the subheads is way too tight. We need to open that up a bit.
• The colon after "fast, safe and easy" looks odd with how it's positioned now. I would make that a period instead.
• We should remove the period on "Get more detailed instructions »"

It's worth noting that we're not opening the menu panel via the new API on this page. The button links directly to about:accounts
Holly's suggestion here is probably also worth consideration when it comes to appropriate copy/user flows https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1024581#c7

This button will also only appear for Firefox Desktop users on version 31 and above. We still also need fallback copy for users on version 29/30 I guess, as well as Firefox for Android/Mobile?
I'm not sure if visitors from any other (non-Firefox) browsers visit this page, but maybe that's also something to consider.
Comment 4•10 years ago
|
||
Actually, looking at the current copy this page is very much geared toward just Firefox for Desktop, so I guess we just need to think about version 29/30 users who will not get the new button.
Comment 5•10 years ago
|
||
To be honest, I'm not sure where that leaves us exactly. Will one version just give people a link and the other way stay as is?
Comment 6•10 years ago
|
||
The situation is, for Firefox 31 users and up, we can link directly to 'about:accounts?action=signup' via a CTA button. For users on older Firefox versions, the page is as you see it now.
Comment 7•10 years ago
|
||
For Firefox 31 users and above, I'm tempted to make it really clean and simple and just use this copy:
Get started with Sync
It’s fast, safe and easy.
Where "Get Started with Sync" is a big button. Then we could still keep "Get more detailed instructions." and "Using an older version of Sync?" as links.
WDYT?

Hi Arcadio-
Please provide information in this bug about the copy you would like to see on the Firefox/sync page for when we can link directly to the sign up flow here:
http://cl.ly/image/3Z1b1C261Y3o
Please define primary and secondary goals for this page.
Thx,

Hi Everyone. So sorry this is very late. Below is my take at messaging and conditional content.
Would love to connect one more time on the 31 vs older than 31 builds and what that impact to the flow is so I can understand the glitch there.
Not sure this is what you all had in mind so happy to connect on Monday to see where we can find the right balance for this page.
The new Sync page should do the following:
Cross-promote the benefits of Sync across all devices
- Desktop, Android mobile and tablet devices
- Promote downloads of Firefox for Android to take full advantage of Sync
Demonstrate scenarios in which Sync is amazing
- Work -> commute (bookmarks, tabs, history)
- Commute -> bookmarks, passwords, history
- At home: Desktop - > tablet (passwords, bookmarks, tabs, history)
Place Sync in the context of the user and the scenario using lifestyle photography if possible
- Desktop - > Tablet
- Desktop -> mobile device
- Desktop -> Laptop
Deliver Firefox privacy and security messages and how it carries across devices
Benefits of Sync (longform)
Sync is about bringing your web with you wherever you go. Your browser is a very personal thing in your life. You tweak it, you customize it, you utilize in a way that makes your life easier. As a consumer of content on the web, you should have the same experience at your work desk, your commute, your couch and your social events. Access your favorite websites and stories. Stay on top of work. Keep your favorite recipes within easy reach wherever you. Sync allows users to choose what to sync between devices. You can sync your bookmarks, web history, share open tabs and your passwords. You work hard at personalizing your browser and you shouldn’t have to do it more than once. With Firefox Sync you can take your web with you anywhere you go.
Primary and Secondary goals for this page
Primary Goal: Drive Sync/Account registrations
Secondary Goal: Demonstrate the benefits of Sync across multiple devices
How you want to handle the following conditional content situations:
User on Fx build older than 31:
- Users on builds older than 31 should click to the about:accounts GET STARTED page
- Users on builds older than 29:
- How do we show them the benefits of new Sync?
- Serve option to upgrade to latest version of Firefox and Sync
- Users on 31 or above will click the bug to go directly to the sign-up page
- User not on Firefox
- Download Firefox
- Fast. Safe. Easy messaging
- Benefits of Sync messaging
user not on desktop:
- User on Android mobile?
- Message: Sync your Firefox for Android browser with your Firefox desktop browser.
- Add Sync button to send directly to the sign-up page
- Sync should be the main message here if we’re coming from a Sync web page
- Revise instructions to send user to Firefox for Android Sync in the context menu
- Show the Android browser Settings menu where the user can register Sync or sign in ( I don’t think this page can be accessed by URL)
3. user already using sync
On desktop:
- Sync your tablet and mobile devices. Get the best of your web by syncing your Android mobile phone and tablets. Learn more [connect to SUMO article on syncing on Android]
On Android
- Sync with your Firefox browser for desktop to get the most out of Firefox. Share history, bookmarks, passwords and tabs with your desktop and mobile browsers. Learn more [connect to SUMO article on syncing on desktop]

Thanks, Arcadio. I'll set up time for you to chat with the Creative team (Lee, Troy, and Matej) as I feel like this is more work than we scoped in our July 30 meeting.
The new functionality doesn't work in builds older than 31 because the Fx engineers didn't add it before Fx 31. We can discuss more in our meeting.
I've asked Mike to reassess the schedule based on proposed scope and when the requirements were provided.

Here's a revised schedule: https://app.smartsheet.com/b/publish?EQBCT=852d1057b2d04df9b07adf14ff347089
It pushes the launch date one week. Once we review requirements and scope we'll see if timing is still feasible.

6 scenarios for conditional Sync content on the top of the page:
1. Fx 31+ user, not signed in
2. Fx 29-30 user
3. Fx 28 or below user
4. non-Fx User
5. Fx for Android user
6. Fx 31+ user, signed in
I'll attached wireframes outlining what to show on the top part of the page for each scenario.
The bottom part of the page will always be about Sync benefits.

Thanks, Jen. That's awesome!
Also, "Get Sync. It rocks." should totally be the new copy.
Troy, have a look to make sure that all makes sense. Also have a read through the early part of the bug. I realize there was a bit of copy exploration there as well.
Let us know if you have any questions.

Hey Matej,
Following up on expanding selected scenarios in which "Sync Rocks". Going to add more than we need to give you options.
Bookmarks
* Commuting: a user can quickly access their bookmarked pages so they can continue reading their favorite stories or keep up with their news or social sites while on their mass transit commute.
* Social situations: as user sometimes I need quick access to things like trivia, one-liners or drink recipes. It's nice that I have access to my bookmarked pages on all my devices
* Work: I like to sync my work computer to my mobile devices because I always want to be prepared
Passwords
* Convenience: As a user, when I sync my passwords across all my device, it makes accessing the password-protected sites that I visit (bank, social networks, medical) easy and convenient. I don't have to remember each password and I don't have to use mobile keyboards to type in complicated passwords. My passwords a pre-populated into the form fields and all I have to do is tap "enter"
Send Tabs (this is different than bookmarks because it sends the websites you're currently reading on one browser to other synced browsers)
* Directions: As user sometimes, I want to continue using my content from one device to another. I might be searching for map directions on my laptop before I have to leave the house, if I sync my accounts, the tabs I have open on my desktop or tablet Firefox for Android browser will appear in my Sync panel of my Firefox for Android browser on my smartphone.
* Couch surfing: When it's time to step away from my desktop computer and catch up on some Thursday night TV, I like to continue reading my web content on my smartphone or tablet while I'm enjoying my favorite shows. Syncing my browser tabs allows me to easily continue reading without having to search

Arcadio, that's awesome. Thanks for all the fodder. Definitely more than we need or can accommodate on the page, but there are ways we can consolidate info to give an overall picture of the benefits of Sync.
One clarification: Is "Send Tabs" the name of a feature? That's the first time I'm seeing that.
Troy, hopefully everything in comment 26 is clear. Let us know if you have any questions.

Up. It's a lot and I don't expect all of it to be used. Just wanted to give it some more flavor.
Send Tabs = Sync Tabs
This is one of the things you can ask the browser to sync when you register or manage you Sync account.
All the things you can Sync are
- Bookmarks
- Passwords
- History
- Open Tabs

Cool, that's what I thought. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't a new feature coming, something where you could select a tab and then say "Send to…" a particular device.

Awesome work, Troy. Love the copy and really appreciate you breaking out all the versions like that.
I left some comments, but I'd love to hear what others think as well.

I see there are six variations of the page:
1. Firefox 31 (signed-out)
2. Firefox 31 (signed-in)
3. Firefox 29 & 30
4. Firefox <=28
5. Not Firefox
6. Firefox for Android
Can one of these variations be deemed the "default" for cases where browser detection fails (or javascript is disabled)? Or perhaps another variation of the text is required for this case?

Troy, I'm working on implementation and there are some variations in the Google Doc across versions that I'm not sure are intentional.
Are the "Sync a little. Sync a lot" sections and "At home / At work / On the go" sections supposed to vary?
I'm seeing a few differences like:
"Move from your desk to the couch..." vs.
"Move from your computer to the couch..."
"Stay connected to all your..." vs.
"Stay connected to all of your..."
Are there blocks of text that you can identify that do not change between page-variations? Thanks.

I see in the copy that there is text for both:
CTA / REMINDER FOR DESKTOP USERS
and
CTA / REMINDER FOR MOBILE USERS
A few questions about this:
1. Does the "CTA / REMINDER" refer to the darker-blue background section of the page (the part with the android robot)?
2. How should we determine "mobile" vs. "desktop" for the CTA area? We have checks for "Firefox for Android", and we have CSS media queries that hide/show content based on screen size, but we don't have a simple "is this a mobile device or a desktop device" check.

I've added the content to the variation spreadsheet:
https://docs.google.com/a/silverorange.com/spreadsheets/d/1aY3vmkUIzbOwPPo6mjncIvlPqeag30RZkBKhwZQnabw/edit#gid=0
The cells with a question-mark are those that I'm not sure of.
B6: Just confirming that there is no "warning" text for this variation. I think that's right - Please confirm.
C21/C23 through G21/G23: For the CTA section for mobile users, is there just a 'sub-heading', not a Heading or Button? If so, is there an alternate design for this variation, or should I just use the blue background and drop the android/headline/button?
Thanks.
