I had spoken with a someone a while ago about this but was recently talking with a visual designer who suggested I file a bug for greater visibility. I'm in the tablet contribution program and have a 10" Flatfish device. One thing I noticed early on was a lack of ease to unlock it. Beyond the size of the lock widget on the tablet, the nature of it is too precise, requiring the user to zero in and hit a small target. And for this tablet, it is wide, designed with a landscape orientation. I found myself holding it with both hands on the sides (like you might watch a movie). But if I needed to unlock it, I had to put it down - or attempt to hold it with my left hand. This seems unnecessary as my thumbs are right there but can't reach the center. So I came up with this concept (see the attached image) which creates slidable regions rather than a singular target. Additional Notes: - The slidable region does not extend all the way to the padlock target as the finger must travel a minimum distance to unlock (aka the gap between the final arrow and the padlock). - The region gives a visual feedback to indicate that the slide is "warming" and when it is "hot" and ready to be released. This might be through color of the whole region or a glow following the finger or some combination thereof. - Alternately, the entire graphical region might slide. - On screen wake a directional animation of the region can give both guidance and a touch of whimsy.

+ Hunter who owns tablet work. The current state of tablet is pretty much a phone UI port, so its not optimal for sure. We are planning to update the unlocking mechanism in a near future release and address tablet as well. The rationale is sound. Unfortunately due to various factors we can not proceed to move forward with that direction. However, perhaps we can re-rig the current unlock mechanism with layout & size to allow for a more accurate slide function? Is this something that you can execute. If you have any other ideas please let us know.

The redesign requirement of unlock screen is logged. We are doing the discussion on refining tablet interface. As for your proposal, our basic guideline of tablet is to keep an nearly identical experience from phone to tablet but make the ergonomic adjustment on the size and layout into tablet, so we may need to consider with phone design at the same time. Thanks for reminding us this important issue. And we will update it soon.
