This bug is to explore what can be done and what makes sense for search suggestions on SUMO. Basically, it would be a drop down with suggestions as you type. I think there are at least two possibilities here:

* it works like google and tries to guess what you are going to search for and completes the word/phrase/sentence. Clicking on one would execute the search for that full string.
* it shows articles and questions below based on what you've typed so far. Clicking on one would take you straight to that article or question.

What is the best experience? What is possible with ES?

This bug is about making a recommendation on whether we should do this at all and how.
Does that sound right, Kadir ^^ ?

Oops, this was Search Suggestions. I'll file the Instant search bug now for the current sprint. Pushing this one out.
Summary: [research] Instant search → [research] Search suggestions

Ricky, the description sounds right. I think the first one is suggestions and the second one sounds more like instant search

pushing search suggestions out.

Moving to next sprint, to clarify purpose in light of instant search being available
Whiteboard: u=user c=search p=3 s=2014.14 → u=user c=search p=3 s=2014.15
Instant search hasn't landed on prod and might need a few iterations depending on feedback we receive. It doesn't make sense to start this yet.
Moving for real

We won't be going forward with this until we have reviewed instant search on production. The major benefit in this would be catching spelling mistakes before they happen, but instant search might give us the same results.

I'm confused - does bug 1039525 (Implement instant search) block this one and this is intended to be way more broad than bug 1039525? Or the other way around, this blocks bug 1039525?

And this bug intended to mainly/only be a nicer search aid for users? Or will it also greatly improve the search results which are requested for example in bug 791250? (of which perhaps bug 794083 Add way to be specific with the advanced search is the biggest issue?)

TBH, search in sumo is so bad/difficult that as a triager for support and bugzilla I stay away from SUMO and don't do much work there - it's just too hard to find things.

This bug is blocked by a review of the implementation of bug 1039525. There are two possible results of that review:
a. Instant Search covers the issue described here, and this bug is set to WONTFIX.
b. Instant Search is not enough, in that case this bug goes back on the roadmap.

Yes, if by nicer you mean: it will give visitors of the site a higher chance to find the article that solves their problem, because we are offering them better search results (in the sense of: do what I mean, not what I say)

Or

This will have limited impact for contributors, it does not cover advanced search at all. There is another project underway though, and if it's prioritized high enough, we might be working on advanced search next quarter. See the forum redesign here: https://docs.google.com/a/mozilla.com/spreadsheets/d/1CRY62Pqthfc3SVBObQ-mJre1Hdx998IX-XMDhqCjkF4/edit#gid=0

Hope we can change that soon!

Thanks!

As you may have noticed, bug 1054652 is my (starting) attempt to identify issues that would greatly help from the contributor POV.
Depends on: 1039525
We already have instant search and unless there's a strong use case for this, we'll close this out.
