Hmm, you're right about the left hand example, although, as you guessed, the page is just coded wrong. That is, the inline style that is said to apply to that <select> isn't actually applied (there is no inline style on that element). Ooops. As for the second, I'm not sure, but it may be correct. The style is applied to the <option>, and when you move focus away from the first option in the dropdown, then you can see that it is green+yellow. As for the question of how it should look when it is the hovered element (should it be blue or green) I'm not sure, but I think that is intentional (I vaguely remember some bug about this). Whether that <option> should show as green when visible as the selected item in the <select>, I don't know the answer. -> HTML Form Controls

The truth is the CSS spec does not specify how form controls can be style. We are actually doing a disservice with what we do allow. I will not be spending any aditional time on "styling-of-form-controls" until the CSS spec describes what is actually standard behavior.
