In #378775, the ability to select text in links was added without the need to press a button. In order to do that, the solution included clearing the current selection in case of an actual link drag. This leads to inconsistent and undesired behavior. Assume some text is selected, now drag anything (e.g. an image) somewhere. As you can see, the selection stays. Now, drag a link instead; the selection is cleared. I really dislike this clearing behavior, and in my opinion #378775 shouldn’t ship that way.

bug 378775 makes links more consistent with text. Make a text selection, now mousedown on text and the current selection clears. Make a text selection, now mousedown on a link and the current selection clears. I can see that this is not desirable when clicking links. I tested Opera 12 and it doesn't clear selection on mousedown with links, only when dragging. Implementing this seems like a possibility. When vertical drag is initiated however the selection has to be cleared since it has already started selecting (this is also what Opera does). I don't see a simple way around this (prevent vertical selection on links? use a secondary selection?) but I think it is still an acceptable compromise for a better balance between text selection and link dragging. Note that the fix for bug 1035036 means that it is possible to use ctrl or shift modifier keys to drag links without losing selection.
