Details

Typing in an address into the location bar (or is the term "URL bar"?) is
painfully slow.

It is very slow and unresponsive, even for typing a two letter shortcut (e.g. I
use "mz" as a keyword shortcut to go to http://mozillazine.org). It is
unbearably slow when I type something longer, especially if I make a mistake and
need to backspace -- it can take over a second for the text to catch up to where
I had typed, so that I can then start editing the url to correct my mistake.

I find this to be the single most frustrating thing about using Mozilla for me,
as it affects me regularly during the course of my web browsing.

For reference, I use a Celeron 400Mhz Linux system with 128Mb of RAM. I
commonly see pauses when typing a URL of around 0.5 seconds.

I get the feeling it is the searching for autocomplete URLs at every letter that
slows it down; but that is no excuse. If you use bash as your shell, Try
hitting Ctrl-R and typing a fragment of command that is in your command history
somewhere. The response on my system is instananeous. I would like to see
Mozilla perform roughly as well.

Apologies if this bug is a dup, I was unable to find another for this exact
problem in bugzilla (although 83205 looks related?).
agreed.
Is it faster if you disable "Autocomplete" ?
Edit/preferences/Navigator/Smart Browsing/Location Bar Autocomplete ?

Matti,
It is much better when I disable autocomplete -- the typing is still slightly
laggy, but useable again. I'd like to be able to use autocomplete, though. I
guess this confirms that this really is a dup of 83205. Sorry for the noise.
