Socket.io v1 is now out:

As part of updating we need to ensure we don't regress bug 1042627, though the blog post linked above implies this should be easier with 1.x:

"If WebSocket is the only transport you want to support moving forward, Engine.IO (with all its browser hacks and workarounds) can be seamlessly removed. "
