When getting new mail, the process seems very slow compared to Netscape 4.7x.
Display of list is actually "jurky".
Running NT 4.0 (SP6a).

are you downloading pop3 mail or imap? Imap header download is faster in
6.x/mozilla than 4.x. Do you mean "jerky", i.e., repainting many times? What are
you sorted by? What version of Mozilla are you running?
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW

Ever confirmed: true
Mozilla 0.9.5, POP3 Email, Sort by date.
Cable Modem on AMD-450 with 256meg mem w/Matrox AGP GL200 8meg Video.
All Email "display" functions are "slow/jerky".
Appears code calls extra/redundant levels of API while processing
the database.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the extra levels of API, I absolutely
assure you (we've profiled it - I'm guessing you haven't, and are just taking a
wild guess). Here's a little experiment for you: get new mail without having the
pop3 inbox open. All the database calls used to store the headers will be made,
but the UI won't get updated. It should be much faster. I still can't tell what
you mean by jerky, unfortunately. Is the UI starved so you can't do other stuff?
Anyway, this is not turning out to be a useful bug report...
All I know is it is slow compared to the other program.
The Email Client was a major plus for "Netscape" and I would hope the same for
Mozilla.
I want to adopt Mozilla as my browser of choice, but the email client
performance has always been below par and do not want to be forced to
purchase/use a 3rd party Email Client.
You can kill the report if you wish, but that will not address the problem.
this isn't specific enough; quantitative information like "netscape 4.7x takes x
seconds vs. mozilla 0.9.5 takes x seconds" would be tremendously useful. We've
got that on http://www.mozilla.org/mailnews/win_performance_results.html.
Anyways, we have a number of outstanding bugs.
See bug 22960 for message display in general, bug 104519 for some api work to
alleviate our sluggish performance, and lastly bug 13653 in relation to
displaying nntp (news) messages.
