User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:31.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/31.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20140715214327

Steps to reproduce:

When you are reading messages and repeatedly archiving or deleting, you will accidentally mark a message as junk because the buttons move around under your mouse as you move from one message to the next. I believe this is because the set of available actions changes from one message to the next.

Actual results:

In the two images I'm attaching, look at the first one, imagine your mouse is over the Archive button which you're repeatedly clicking as you go through messages. Then suddenly the buttons change (as in buttons2.png) and what used to be the Archive button is now the Junk button. Which you clicked, maybe without even noticing it! Whoops!

Yep, that's odd and error-prone.

STR

- in same folder, have some msgs marked junk and some not
- going through each of the messages in rapid sequence, click archive message header button on most of them
- keep your mouse pointer in the same position of "Archive" button, and observe position of "Archive" button as you go from junk to non-junk message

Actual result

-> suddenly other buttons occur in the position of "Archive" button, depending if Junk button is shown or not

Expected result (?)

hmmm. Buttons should not jump around unless inevitable. Perhaps Junk button should not disappear. So it should become "Not Junk" button for messages already marked as Junk??

We have several bugs around this, e.g. bug 898798 and bug 562050.
It's perhaps not as easy as it looks.
So what's your proposal for improvement?
Summary: buttons should not move → "Archive" message header button (and others) move around depending on presence of "Junk" button, which is error-prone for sequential archiving of multiple messages
It sort of seems like Junk/Not Junk is causing all the problems, because Archive and Delete, and the others are consistently there as options. You might be able to mostly solve this problem by simply moving Junk/Not Junk all the way to the inside (as in, to the left of Reply).
