Thunderbird 24.2.0 (2013118082126) Installed on July 28, 2014. Actual results: Calendar is no longer available. Expected results: Calendar should work as it was before the update.

TB 24.2 is by no means the latest update. Try to be at least on TB 24.6 and there should be a compatible Lightning calendar for it. Also try to go into Tools->addons and see if the Lightning addon is disabled and why. Click "Check for updates" (to addons) to look for a newer compatible version.
There is also a lightning version for 31
