This is a UI convention from webOS that I think is really subtle and quite nice.

Basically, it carries over the coloration and arrangement of the chat bubbles from within the thread to the Messages thread list to help you check at a quick glance whether or not the last message in a given thread was inbound or outbound.

I've attached a simple mockup that shows what this kind of UI hint could look like using the current FFXOS UI for the Messages.

You can obviously tweak the gradient and luminance to make it a bit more subtle, but I honesty like the look and think it'll translate well/make sense to users.

I quite like the idea of showing inbound/outbound message at inbox level :) Just not sure if it's important enough to use the entire list as the indicator.

Fair enough. As I said, this is exactly how webOS implemented it.

FFXOS doesn't seem to use gradients anywhere, so this method doesn't fit as well.

Honestly, the only indicators I've seen anywhere in the OS would be the "unwatched video" bar in the Videos app.

What were you thinking as an in/out indicator method Jenny?

Yes, currently we don't use any gradients in our comment UI. And the indicator usually we use it on inbox "Email, Message".
