when you hit cntl-n to bring up a new browser window, the location bar should
have the text cursor focus.
this way, you can hit cntl-n and immediately start typing in a URL

You're probably running into bug 76621, where the search sidebar steal focus
from the location bar even when the search sidebar is not visible. Try closing
the sidebar completely (F9) or switching to a different sidebar tab.
the problem was the "hidden" search bar. closing it with f9 works.
