Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; WOW64; rv:31.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/31.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20140716183446
Steps to reproduce:
Tried to load Lightning 3.3 using Firefox 31 (because I couldn't load it directly as my Windows 8.1 does not recognise .xpi files and cannot open them).
Actual results:
Failed: message appeared saying Lightening 3.3 was incompatible with Firefox 31. I had already tried to do this in another way in Thunderbird and, while it appeared to load, T'bird repeatedly froze as soon as any action was taken (e.g opening messages).
The T'bird version I'm trying to load into is 31: Lightning is running quite happily on my laptop in T'bird 24.6.0 - but I suspect it may be an earlier version of Lightning.
Expected results:
It would have loaded!

I just download the xpi file and then install from file in thunderbird. I've never found another way.

Lightning is an add-on for *thunderbird*, not firefox.
To install you can download the xpi and open the Add-ons tab in thunderbird and choose "Install from file...".
Or just serch for lighting there. Also, right click lightning in the Add-ons tab and select "Find updates" if it didn't update automatically for some reason.
