RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 736002

People

(Reporter: davidbourguignon.net, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.2; WOW64; rv:31.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/31.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20140716183446

Steps to reproduce:

Entered a text in the tweet box of the Twitter Chat UI.

Actual results:

The system told me there was more than 140 characters. I posted the tweet directly on Twitter: it worked. Is this because Twitter has a build-in URL shortener?

Expected results:

It should have worked? Or at least provide some word count display to help me in my tweet reduction task... :-)
It seems a duplicate of bug 736002. However, this one is more about the fact that Chat is not using any shortener, which I don't know if Twitter API itself is providing.

Summary: Word count is wrong in Twitter Chat UI → When a URL is included, word count is wrong in Twitter Chat UI
Twitter automatically shortens URLs to t.co links. The character count takes this into account since bug 954484. Updating to Thunderbird 31 will likely fix this for you.
Thanks Javi and Florian for the infos. I will let you know if this still shows up with Thunderbird coming release.
