I use a Debian Potato box, with Mozilla installed from Ximian.org.
(0.9.3-ximian.2*.deb) I tried to install Sun's WEBStart, and after that all of
my plugins disappeared from Mozilla. They are still there in the directory, but
Mozilla do not see any of them.
Hmm.. sounds like this bug should be filed with Sun..

You write "tried to install" - does that mean the installation of Webstart
somehow failed?

Were path statements or similar added to your various configuration files, that
might explain why the plugins are no longer seen?

You can check that in your homedir and perhaps in /etc/skel

Does re-installing Mozilla change anything? You may want to try a newer version
- the latest Mozilla release is 0.9.5
I tried to reinstall all of the mozilla packages, and tried to create a new user
too, to see if there are some problems with my config files. But none of these
helped.

I tried to install the Java plugin again, but after downloading I've got the
following error message:
Download was unsuccesful. ... Error encountered -- -202.
It was the result just after the downloading was finished on the progress bar. I
tried it 3 times with the same result. What is this 202 error?
You have to run mozilla as root to be able to install the javaplugin. Ximian are
slooow at upgrading mozilla anyway - I'd suggest uninstall mozilla*ximian*, and
use the version that comes with sid, or the builds linked from mozillazine.
0.9.3 is so old it you can't expect much help with it.
Don't know what stunts WebStart perform during an install, but i'd recommend
checking whether files in /etc and /etc/skel were recently modified.

I've seen "rouge" apps add rather insane modifications (bashrc, ld.so.conf and
others) without a single hint. Effectively breaking my linux user profile.

Then again - it may just have broken symlinks. I still don't think this is a
Mozilla bug though.
I tried to check the files in /etc and /etc/skel, but I was unable to find what
goes wrong there - if any.

I "solved" the problem by downloading the new 0.9.5 version, and I can use the
plugins now. Without the need of downloading them again. I just had to copy them
in the new plugin directory. So it works now. Thanx.
Resolving this as WFM per reporters comment.

Csaba:
If another installtion of Webstart should break plugins again, please reopen
this bug or add a comment.
